This item performs as advertised, but in such an unstable manner that I could not recommend it to any one. I use a competitor’s equiptment. Thumbs down. Rating: 3 / 5

I never purchased the external HD fro WD because it doesn’t boot up from Tiger, as it doesn’t have Firewire support.
Luckily I found this out before re-purchasing the above-mentioned drive. It was doubly confusing for myself, as the
Western Digital products are by and large compatible with Mac.
Anyway, Amazon routed my to Other World Computing, and I found a HD for my purposes. Rating: 1 / 5

I purchased this drive for < $60 US last year. The drive stays cool and the USB interface allows smart control monitoring
via : smartctl –all -d sat,12 -T permissive

I purchased the WD Elements 1.5TB drive to back-up my desktop. Only upon installation, did I learn this product comes with no software, cannot be programmed in any way, and any storage is by manual file by file transfer! After having other WD external hard drives for back-up, this felt like a bait and switch. Useless for automatic back-ups – BEWARE. Rating: 1 / 5

I have multiple computers at home. I basically use computers for home use such as keeping financial records, word processing, E-mails, and surfing the internet. I read the reviews and thought that this would be a good hard drive for back up. I wanted to image my hard drive weekly in case there was a problem. I use Vista Home. According to the reviews it seemed that this was the best option. I found out that the basic vista does not have a complete backup center. After about an hour of backing up everything froze. I sent the hard drive back to WD and they replaced it, but I still had the same problem. This will not work for me as a backup drive. This hard drive may be an option for someone who has significant computer knowledge,but if you are not very computer savy this is not a good device for regular backing up of your computer Rating: 1 / 5
